Viola/penumbra is an artistic studio at the centre of a global network of fashion creatives. Beauty, narrative depth and a constellation of refined details define the work, determining how brands are seen and understood.
Like the shadow’s edge (penumbra) that outlines a flower (viola), the blueprint for
beauty can be found where light and darkness meet.
Working across fashion, art and culture, the studio creates original campaigns and provides direction and consultancy for brands seeking a distinctive identity.
Viola/penumbra was founded by Matthew Smith.
Matthew is the founder and editor-in-chief of True Love fashion magazine. A creative director, fine art and fashion photographer, novelist and poet, his award-winning work has been published and exhibited internationally.
He read English at Oxford University.
